What
About Grades?
If
a student is grade oriented they will spend more
time and effort trying to find out the criteria
for getting an A before they try to learn the
material. A college professor told me students
frequently ask how long a term paper needs to
be to get an A--as if it is graded by the pound.
Are you grade-oriented? Do you teach your children
to make sure they pass tests? If so, you are thinking
like the majority of today's American parents,
with a "school mentality." The "school
mentality" is a belief that making a high
grade means learning, and retention has taken
place. You need to change your thinking. Change
your goals to motivate them to learn and to enjoy
learning--not worry about grades and percentiles.
New
home schoolers often fret over report cards and
grades. This is another area we think that the
schools do it, so it must be profitable. Spend
a minute and re-think these two issues--do home
schoolers need report cards and grades? Could
these items even be damaging? Are they Scriptural?
To
determine if something is Scriptural, look at
the motives Why do teachers give report cards?

To
tell parents how the children are progressing?
|
 |
So
the teacher can keep everyone straight because
she has 30 students. |
 |
To
brag about how well the child is doing or
how well the teacher is instructing?
|
 |
To
compare the child with the other children?
(see Proverbs 16:18 |
 |
To
keep a record of a child's progress
|
 |
Is
it to evaluate the child? |
You
will know how your child is progressing working
him daily. You evaluate the child by checking
the work or listening to the child not by giving
the grade. What does God's Word say about comparing?
For
we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare
ourselves with some that commend themselves: but
they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing
themselves among themselves, are not wise. But
we will not boast of things without our measure,
but according to the measure of the rule which
God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach
even unto you. 2 Cor 10:12-13
Christian's
have a responsibility to do the best we can in
all circumstances. Not comparing ourselves to
anyone but comparing only to the individual gifts
and talents God has given to us.
