Harnessing the Power of the Web

The Internet is a huge, amazing, world-wide system of voluntarily interconnected networks with literally millions of documents, resources, databases and a variety of methods for communicating - - it has become the best opportunity for improving education since the printing press started putting books in the hands of millions. This opportunity is just starting to be tapped by educators. We want to help you utilize the Internet in your homeschool. Here are just a few things you can do:

bullet Read about unit studies that utilize the Internet!
bullet Communicate with other homeschoolers, educators and excerpts
bullet See how homeschoolers score better academically and socially.
bullet Study different  teaching approaches
bullet Download educational software, demos and freeware
bullet Read curriculum and book reviews
bullet Find catalog suppliers
bullet Read about homeschool families
bullet Search for used curriculum
bullet Research topics for papers and projects using online reference materials
bullet Go on Virtual Field Trips
bullet Click here for more

Getting Started

If you or your student plan on using the Internet to help homeschool, you'll be using search engines almost daily. We have created a page you'll want to add to your bookmarks that includes a List of  the Major Search Engines

There are several search engines and you need to learn how to use at least one of them. Not all web pages are listed on all search engines. Search engines gather information differently and categorized differently. Some are organized solely by keyword search. The list of engines below give an overview of each engine. I suggest you use each engine a few times until you find the one that works for you. When you go to the search engine site, read the "Search Options" or the "How to Search." To learn how the engine works.

Bookmarks

When you find a web site to which you would like to return frequently (like this one), you can create a bookmark for that page by pulling down the Bookmarks menu at the top of the Netscape or Explorer  window, and selecting the Add Bookmark option. The next time you pull down the Bookmarks menu, you should see your new entry in the list of available bookmarked sites, and you can return to the desired site by clicking on the appropriate bookmark entry.
